Medicines recall issued for ChloraPrep applicators

Healthcare professionals are being advised that selected batches of ChloraPrep 2% applicators are being recalled due to a potential sterility issue affecting the packaging process.

What's happened

The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has issued a Class 2 Medicines Recall for specific batches of ChloraPrep 2% 1mL applicators and ChloraPrep Frepp 2% 1.5mL applicators manufactured by Becton Dickinson UK Ltd.

The recall follows concerns about a potential breach of sterility during the packaging process.

ChloraPrep products are commonly used to disinfect the skin before invasive procedures, including injections and minor surgical procedures.

Healthcare providers are advised to identify and quarantine affected stock immediately and follow the instructions set out in the recall notice.

Why this matters to members

Some podiatrists may use ChloraPrep products when preparing skin before administering local anaesthetic injections or carrying out other clinical procedures.

Members should review the recall notice, check stock held within their service or practice and ensure any affected products are removed from use.

What happens next

Further information, including affected batch numbers and actions required, is available in the MHRA recall notice.
