What’s happened

The UK’s Chief Medical Officers have published updated physical activity guideline infographics.

The resources set out recommended levels of physical activity at different stages of life. Professionals working in health, education and sport are being encouraged to use them to help people understand the type and amount of physical activity they should do.

The infographics cover:

  • early years

  • children and young people

  • adults

  • older adults

  • pregnant and postnatal women

  • disabled adults

  • disabled children and young people

They also explain how strength and balance activity can support healthier and more independent ageing.

The Chief Medical Officers are the most senior advisers to the UK’s governments. There is one Chief Medical Officer representing each of the four nations.

Why this matters to members

The guidance is intended to help more people become physically active in ways that are appropriate for their age and situation.

Podiatrists frequently work with people whose disabilities, comorbidities or wider health needs can make movement more difficult. The infographics may support conversations about physical activity and help members direct patients towards guidance suited to their circumstances.

Podiatrists also care for many people living with diabetes and other long-term conditions, where advice about movement may need to take account of mobility, risk and individual health needs.

The infographics form part of a wider collection of government resources designed to encourage physical activity. These include NHS Active 10, Couch to 5k and Joe Wicks’ animated children’s workout series, Activate.
